Gordon Lightfoot made only one appearance on The Tommy Hunter Show. After finishing his first song, which was 'Shadows'. They talked a little. Tommy told him, I see you 3 or 4 times a year, we get together, we had dinner hundreds of times. And I see you on the golf course with that 3wood, hit that thing 230 yards. And of course Im back cause I stand on the wrong side of the ball. And then Gordie turning towards the audience said "That's right folks he's a ????? ?????? Can someone tell me what Gord called Tommy? I guess for a person that plays golf this is maybe easy. It's maybe a term that they use in the game of golf, I really dont know...GOOD LUCK!!! :) :D

(H)omer IMHO you are not playing fair
Just because you have all these old video recordings and the rest of us don't you think you sre smart by replaying them and picking out a nugget of mind blowing trivia to pose a question.
Regarding your last poser I am not quite honestly very interested in any sporting question even if Gord asociated. But if each ? in your clue is one character then it just might be
"damn leftie"??

I tried googling and only found smart-ass comments like
"According to one golf writer, left-handed golfers used to be as rare as a double eagle. "

Maybe Im not playing fair, but it's not intentionaly. But I dont watch the old clips. I have watch them so many times that I know most of them by heart. And I tought there would be at least another one like me in here. AS Im sure there are.

Here's another one that comes to mind just by answering you. Peter Gzowski told Gord, I live with someone who can bloody well recite you. I go into, the ghost and a wishing well, and she gives me the rest of the song. And Gord laughed like crazy. JJ, Omar, Omer, Homer...

duffer would be my guess...

I remember Gzowski saying that and Gord laughing..

Jesse Joe 05-30-2006 06:37 AM

No tomato Char, Im guessing that a golf player uses this term maybe? IF I was a golfer I would be one. I shoot the puck left side, same as batting the baseball, and what have you? Yet I write with my right hand, also play guitar right handed, like Gordon, Im really proud about that one. (LOL) :D

Charlene you living in the Toronto area, Have you ever been to a Tommy Hunter Show {TAPING}? I really do miss that show. He had a lot more years, that he could have done it. Probably still could... :)

charlene 05-30-2006 02:42 PM

no - never went to a taping of the Tommy Hunter Show but watched many many many of them.....

Jesse Joe 05-30-2006 03:50 PM

Just like me, I dont know what it was, he just made you feel good about being Canadian. :) To me anyway, plus was a very good friend with Gordon. And he would mention him every season. Always doing a couple of his songs. Did you like Front Page Challenge? I remember making my lessons at night, and when Front Page would come on , I had to go watch it. Iv'e got a good Gordon Sinclair story that I might share with you all one day if you want to hear it. It depicts the kind of a man (father) he was. Pierre Berton, Betty Kennedy, Fred Davis. And in the later years, Jack, Bruno, Alan, Boy it was great... :)

OK OK you keep leaving yourself open for criticisms and witticisms my friend
Example
Omer it's make your mind up time originally you said
"That's right folks he's a ????? ?????? Can someone tell me what Gord called Tommy?"
I replied entirely logically
"But if each ? in your clue is one character then it just might be "damn leftie"??"
But you failed to confirm that I was correct
Now you have changed your tune and say:-
""That's right folks he's a ??? Can someone tell me what Gord called Tommy?"
So using the same impeccable reasoning he must have said "???"="wit"/"rat"/"sot"/"nut"/"cad"/"sod"/
"con"/"fop"/
Which one is it??
John Fowles
The winner by default!!!

charlene 05-31-2006 10:26 AM

was the answer 'tomato" ?????
if not then what was it he called Tommy ????

NO NO Omer specified "???" which is only three letters ??
BUT... dear Charlady I feel you are possibly onto something here.So let's try a simple "Tom"
!!!
An interesting aside here in the UK the best tow-mah-toes are from the chamnel island of Jersey
and are known as "Jersey Toms"
Here in the States me tooism says the best
US Tow-May-toes come from tada tada New Jersey!!
Also there is the Toms River in New Jersey

and...and...last year
"Members of the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on Monday approved a measure designating the Jersey tomato as the official state vegetable."

John Fowles
"There's not many people know that" as Michael caine was wont to utter

swede 05-31-2006 04:19 PM

I didn't see the show, but I can imagine Gord saying "south-paw".

Jesse Joe 05-31-2006 04:42 PM

Swede your close enough. He turned to the audience and said, "That's right folks he's a South Putter." I went to take a look at the show one more time, and you are absolutely right. He does say. "That's right folks he's a "south-paw".

Jees Swede, Im starting to think your the man himself. If not your someone really close to him , Barry Harvey, Tommy Hunter, A band member?

You also got Iqualuit, from the other quiz, with The late great Peter Gzowski. You have to be Gordon Lightfoot? I worship you man.

The answer for Tommy Hunter quiz is, South Paw...

Swede #1091 got it, just like he got Iqualuit, on the Peter Gzowski question.

I actually stopped reading this thread not long after the very first "quiz" (sorry Jessi-Joe) but came back to it tonight, after reading another thread in which Jessi-Joe mentioned this quiz that swede answered correctly, because I was curious as to what the quiz question was.

In the US anyway, the term "south-paw" is pretty commonly used with regard to left handed individuals - especially in sports - and certainly not one that Lightfoot invented during that interview. Since he says he didn't see the show, I imagine the commonality of the term is how swede was able to answer your quiz without having seen the interview you were quoting.

Jesse Joe 06-01-2006 05:11 AM

That has to be it. But sometimes, one wonderssss?? :D

Another Quiz!!! :) http://www.members.aol.com/ALLVINTAGESHOWS/GOR79.JPG

In 1979, Gordon Lightfoot did a concert from Chicago. To be aired on Soundstage. He played old and newer songs. From his latest album which would come out the following year. ' Dream Street Rose'. On the second set, he played a joke on his audience. He was about to go to the next song, which was, 'On The High Seas'. He told the crowd, OK this one is called, 'On the ??" :D

This is the quiz, what did he say the name of the song was? 'On The ?? ' Good Luck, Are you around, Swede? :D  :)
