To Rob1956, RobbyLake, Paskatefan and the other Jethro Tull fans on this forum:

Last Monday evening, I was in the 5th row of Melbourne's Palais Theatre for the 'Best of Jethro Tull' concert performed by Ian Anderson and his evolved band. Anderson changed the band's name after parting company with the last two long-standing Tull members, because he was never comfortable with Jethro Tull being misunderstood as his own name or the fact it became more associated with the band than with the 18th Century agriculturist the band was named after.

The concert was excellent. The first half was Doggerland, Enter The Uninvited, The Engineer, Thick As A Brick (nearly the whole 40 minute-song!), Banker Bets Banker Wins, Too Old To Rock And Roll Too Young To Die, and Bouree. After intermission, they performed Living In The Past, With You There To Help Me, Sweet Dream, Teacher, Critique Oblique (from the concept album A Passion Play), Songs From The Wood, Farm On The Freeway, Aqualung and (encore) Locomotive Breath.

Anderson's singing voice is shot-to-bits these days, but his flute and guitar playing, showmanship and songwriting are as good as ever (and his band includes a young singer who takes many of the challenging sections). Some of the songs were performed with backdrop videos of their original filmclips from the 1970s etc, which I found hilarious.

Anderson, now aged 67, has said this may be his last tour of Australia. If so, he has left us on a high. And if he continues to record brilliant albums like the recent "Homo Erraticus" and "Thick As A Brick 2: Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock?", we still have plenty to look forward to.
