Lincoln Alexander dies at 90
The Hamilton Spectator

Hamiltonians are mourning the loss of one of one of the city’s most well-known and well-loved citizens.

Lieutenant Governor David Onley announced this morning that Lincoln Alexander passed away at age 90.

“A great Canadian, a great man. In the name of Her Majesty and the people of Ontario, our condolences to his wife Marni and his family,” Onley said in a statement.

Within minutes of Onley’s announcement, social media sites exploded with condolences and rememberances of “Linc” from Hamiltonians, media outlets and public figures. A memorial to Linc sprung up at City Hall within hours of Onley’s statement.

“Linc” broke many barriers during his long career. He was the first black member of the House of Commons, and in 1985, he became Ontario’s first black Lieutenant Governor.

He served four terms in Ottawa representing West Hamilton until he resigned his seat in 1980 to serve as chairman of the Workman's Compensation Board, as the WSIB was then known.

In 2006, he was voted the Greatest Hamiltonian of All Time.

He was a well-recognized fixture in the Hamilton political and social scene, most recently on his motorized wheelchair. He married his wife, Marni Alexander, in July 2011.

He also has a son, Keith, daughter-in-law Joyce, and granddaughters Erika and Marissa.
