View Full Version : I'm a grandmother!!!!

Guess what? My oldest son, Matt, went and made me a grandma. He and his wife Nadia had their first child on July 31st, an adorable little girl named Madeline. She weighed 5 lbs, 14 oz. at birth and is doing well. They're going home this evening.
Matt said he actually cried the first time he held her. Imagine that. A 6'3", 210 lb. man who likes to play the tough guy, crying over his new baby...
Do I feel any different now that I'm a grandmother? Not really. For three years now, my other son has lived with a woman who has two small sons from a previous marriage. They call Dan 'Dad' and me 'Grammy Cathy'. The youngest often visits his real father, but I'm convinced that Dan is Dad in his small world, and I'll always be Grammy Cathy.
Cherish those babies, my sons, because in a blink of an eye they'll be grown and married, with children of their own.

well i don't know where my post went but here we go again..
Congrats to all of you! Babies make even the biggest 'men' cry..especially their own when they're born.
It's crazy how folks around here have kids heading off to school, finishing school, getting married, having grandbabies..where's the time gone??
Doug (plumbguru) and Charlotte had their 2nd grandbaby on the 28th. Amanda and hubby had their 2nd daughter - one day before her big sister turned 2!
congrats to them too!
I know pics will be coming soon....

Congratulations Grandma Cathy! There's nothing like being a grandparent. All the fun of being a parent without the fuss and muss. And they always think you are awesome!
The grand kids do grow in a blink of an eye. Those babies of my baby that I once held with wonder are now heading to kindergarten and second grade. Where does the time go?
Love the name Madeline. Thanks for letting us know.
Congrats on the second one too, Doug.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats. And now.... I'll attempt to spell her name correctly. It's Madelyn Rosa Thompson, and her nick name is Maddie, or Maddy, however you spell it. I spent the entire afternoon at the hospital and held her for a long time. She's so sweet! She has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes, but I think that will change in time, because Nadia has dark hair and eyes.
Char, that is so true. It seems like only yesterday that I was marveling over my baby brother. Now his kids are nine and four years old. Time flies.
I took my camera today, but the batteries died before I could snap a picture. Matt promises he'll e-mail a picture to me.
Madelyn is very tiny, a little under 6 lbs. I think I had forgotten how tiny a newborn is.
Thanks again for all the kind words.
Cathy
Congratulations Cathy!
As Char stated Charlotte and I are grandparents for the second time. It is a particularly happy time. Our new grand daughter's name is Aubrey Faith.
Have fun!

congratulations! My baby, Caroline, ( 3 syllables JJ), was born with strawberry blonde hair. Her dad's hair is nearly black and mine is blonde. At 22, she still has her strawberry blonde hair and it is beautiful! enjoy your new baby; they do grow up way too fast... (except for those teen years... they take forever)

I must have sent that to you? That's Matt when he graduated from high school about 11 years ago. Cute, huh? Of course he's aged a little. He's gotten heavier, keeps his beautiful, curly blond locks cut short and has a goatee. He's still cute in my eyes, though.

It's so cool. I can hug her, kiss her, cherish her, but I DON'T have to change her poopy diapers. I can just hand her to her parents and say, "Here you go..."
I think sooner or later I'll have to do it. I won't mind, though.

Lisa, I'm pretty sure her hair and eyes will be brown. Matt has blond hair and blue eyes, but Nadia is half Mexican, and has dark hair and eyes. She'll end up beautiful either way.

Yeah, they're growing up quickly. And Sophie is at least 8 years more grown up than her actual age. She just discovered Justin Beeber and has a crush on him. It's going to drive Aaron nuts if he has to listen to Beeber grooves echoing through the house day after day.

Hey Cathy (and all). :)
Congrats. on being a Grandmother.
Y'know, the title of your thread reminds me of the 1983 movie "Terms Of Endearment",in the scene where Shirley MacLaine shouts at the dinner table "Why should I be happy about being a Grandmother??!!" LOL!!
Hopefully you took the news better than she!

Yes, you're absolutely right! Kids grow so fast and you'll never realize that until one day, they'll be walking to you again saying they have kids already. :)
I am a mother of 3 and my mother was "not so happy" when I got pregnant but the moment she saw my children, (especially my eldest), she forgot the anger and just loved my daughters.
Kids are angels sent from heaven.
And by the way, Congratulations Cathy!

CathyHow wonderful! Babies have been known to be the strongest people on earth, when you think about it. More than one man has been brought to their knees when a child reaches out & smiles at them. Babies are such wonderful people it's hard to put words to what I feel about those beautiful little things. And you are right. People do need to cherish them.
