And it ain't pretty: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/music/news/bob-dylan-is-just-a-phoney-says-joni-mitchell-14779913.html
Sigh. Don't know what brought this on but golly Moses folks, to quote from Bert Cooper (a favorite "Mad Men" character): "who cares?"

was thinkin that this could launch a Fox celeb reality show (something like the Marriage Ref)...yeah, and GL to do a guest spot as a judge... ok, he may be too boringly diplomatic for US tv:cool:

maybe she's jealous that he did a better version of Big Yellow Taxi!

She's been gone from Canada way too long or age is creeping up on her.
wow, imo, you guys missed the boat on this one...you call this appropriate?
"There is a notorious story of Dylan pretending to fall asleep and then obnoxiously “snoring” when previewing Mitchell’s album Court and Spark with David Geffen while Mitchell was present"
lol, sounds like typical Dylan....anyhow, like annie says, i couldnt care...i dont care for their voices or art
as far as a celeb wrestle, I would put my dollar on Mitchell, she has the bigger balls... that is why they had a woman play Bob in film, and a man portray Joni on stage...heh heh
btw, i think the Canuck 'reserved, polite' brand has the way of the dodo, since Van2010...jessie joe is an exception, as is gord:)
char, next tele-interview, please ask GL to comment on Joni's comments, lol

pretty sure he'd deflect/not comment - as a 'lived my life in canada Canadian' would do..
;)
I may be able to trace my preference for the male voice back to hearing Joni on the radio when I was a kid..

hmmmm maybe this is why James Taylor referred to Joni Mitchell as, "A bitch, THE bitch" during one of his live performances that aired on public television.

i didnt realize the interview hadnt been posted here - here it is:
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/music/la-et-jonimitchell-20100422,0,5684541.story?page=1
did Bob ever say why he went from Zimmerman to Dylan? any other folk singers with non-birth names? I realize alt-names are common in pop and acting...i believe the entertainment biz is mainly about deception, i don't see the big deal and i don't see where the word phoney was used (this was the headline in the UK article posted)...anyhow, both artists ARE multi-talents, duh (regardless of bitch or ahole status, lol)
mende,
thanks but it will not play in my country...it is a fun rhythm tune to play, i wondered if Bob put his trademark drone on it
jjo, i love that neil clip...i remember it from recent a song writing thread....GL should go on that Charlie Rose show...Chuck's facial intensity and mannerisms make me giddy
when the reporter annoyingly compared her to Dylan, i think joni should have left it at 'he and i are like night and day'...imo, bob is night in an appealing way...here is an example of joni shining like the sun...i could listen to an entire album of this stuff
YouTube- Joni Mitchell-Me and My Uncle (1965)
that may be the last performance where she wore makeup...
lastly, i dont take too much of what these artists say seriously....joni said during a HOF acceptance speech that she would no longer be performing (but she IS performing)....gord said many times recently that he no longer writes (but then contradicted that in a more recent interview, saying he HAS written some new stuff...i like that sort of contradiction of fact:) )

jj, there's another clip of Bob doing the song on youtube. its sung in his country voice from self portrait and new morning. i can post an MP3.
"late last night i heard the screen door slam. a big yellow bulldozer took away the house and land" !
thx, i got to hear a bit of it at the dylan website, enough to get his flavour
i also like that lyric altering...there is a lot of that going on around here
in my case it would be 'the developers messed with the water tables and bummed up my well" (ok, it needs some work on the meter)

I also would like to see Charlie Rose interview Gord. I do like his style a lot & have seen many of my favorites doing his show.
I would also like to see Lightfoot on 'Larry King Live'... The entire planet is watching that show. I would be interested to hear what Larry thinks of this great Canadian poet.
If he's a fan @ all I would be willing to bet that he would try a sing along with Lightfoot @ the end. He does it with most singers that he has on the show.

"did Bob ever say why he went from Zimmerman to Dylan?"
I am not a Dylanologist, so haven't a clue except to suggest that maybe it was a tip of the hat to poet Dylan Thomas? He had said, in essence, that it's a free country and you can call yourself whatever you please and he never felt like a Robert Zimmerman. I understand that - I never felt like an Anne Marie but that's what my folks hung on me. Too bad they didn't name me after my godmother, my aunt (Margaret) Ellen. SHE was named for one of the aunties (my maternal grandmother's aunts from Ireland), Aunt Maggie Riordan. Now that name I could learn to like.

he's been asked that in interviews and always denied the Dylan Thomas comparison. he just said he liked the way the name sounded

Amazing Annie my mother was also a Margaret Ellen and it was her passing in early 1999 and my subsequent inheritanve that funded my chat room activities starting just about 11 years ago and my pilgrimage to Massey 1999 and thus to my emmigration to the US a few months later
annie, thanks..i did a search on celeb birth names and was surprised to find out how many Jewish folks change(d) their names, especially decades ago...maybe a sign of the times...anyhow, i really don't feel like my name either (how many of us do?)...is it too late to change now i wonder...maybe i'll take Zimmerman:cool:
jjo, i saw that when it aired (without the youtube toyish editing), lol...our hero probably also has a high tolerance...Willie says he uses some sort of vapourizer contraption instead smoking to get the job done...i wonder if you can get a THC patch...maybe should pitch that on Dragon's Den, lol
Question: what Gord tune would be most suitable to Larry to sing along to?
Misty, yeah, I guess it keep it all interesting but generally speaking i often make decisions or take actions or inactions based on people's word so it can be frustrating...as i said, i love that GL changed his mind...i hope next folks backstage really prod him as to when we can hear some new material!:)
mende, yeah, based on the clip I heard, that was Dylan's voice in pretty fine (ok, maybe that adjective should be saved for the Bocelli's and Groban's out there, lol) form...i never did like those back vox on either of their arrangements...i cannot find anything on youtube using Dylan and Yellow Taxi keywords
anyhow, i am sure Joni's comments has resulted in a few hits on the web...both her and Dylan have pretty slick websites, nice design
he's been asked that in interviews and always denied the Dylan Thomas comparison. he just said he liked the way the name sounded
well, here is the 'best answer' selected by the Asker...and if you read it on the internet it must be true, lol:

jj I also did watch the entire Willie Nelson interview w/ Larry King, I would never miss an interview of Willie ! And Anderson Cooper had a good laugh with that "toyish editing" just before going on w/ his program. :p
Now for the Lightfoot tune I dont really know... maybe "If Children Had Wings" because of the line that goes... "And a wife cannot stand too much pain." for the obvious reason...Larry had many wifes !
