Points are awarded for each game, where two points are awarded for a win, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation. Among major professional sports leagues, the NHL is the only one to award a team points for losing in overtime.

Toronto played like a winning team last night. The Montreal Canadiens are fast becoming the new Leafs if they dont turn things around.

Yes Don Cherry had another moving Remembrance Day tribute. Grapes is a good Canadian, I never miss Coach's Corner. And on the first part about vicious hit from behind; (head in the boards), it won't stop until someone gets killed. (IMO)

Maple Leafs most valuable NHL team for fourth straight year

NEW YORK — For the fourth straight year, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the NHL's most valuable team, according to Forbes magazine's annual survey.

The Leafs are worth US$470 million, an increase of five per cent over last year. They easily are worth more than the next franchise, the New York Rangers at $416 million, up just one per cent.

The original six franchises are in the top seven, with only Philadelphia at No. 5 breaking that monopoly. Montreal is third ($339 million), followed by Detroit ($337 million), Philadelphia ($273 million), Boston ($271 million) and Chicago ($258 million).

The Vancouver Canucks ($239 million) were the next highest Canadian team coming in at ninth. Calgary ($200 million) was 16th; Ottawa ($197) 17th; and Edmonton ($166 million) - the lowest-valued Canadian team - at 24th.

Chicago has the biggest rise in value, up 26 per cent, followed by Washington at 15 per cent to $183 million.

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins rank 11th at $222 million.

The average value of the 30 teams is $223 million, a slight increase over the $220 million of 2008.

Not surprisingly, the Phoenix Coyotes, with all their ownership issues, have the lowest worth, $138 million. And 14 teams - nearly half the league - went down in value, ranging from Colorado decreasing by 11 per cent to Philadelphia falling one per cent.

Toronto has, by far, the most operating income, $78.9 million, Forbes reported. Second in operating income is Montreal at $31.3 million.

The Leafs are tops in revenues, too, at $168 million, followed by the Rangers at $139 million.

Leafs losing games at record rate
But have they lost hope?

They are losing games at a rapid rate and every way imaginable, but have the futile Maple Leafs also lost hope?

For now, what you see is what you get as management has no immediate fix for this frustrating and forlorn season.

For tonight anyway, the group that has bumbled through the first 20 games and is on pace to being one of the worst editions in franchise history will be left to rescue themselves against a league powerhouse.

There is little hope for the present, with management unable or unwilling to pull the trigger until it decides there is no alternative other than putting an underachieving veteran on waivers.

Worse still for hostile Leafs fans, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep faith in the future given the steep price in draft picks it cost to acquire Phil Kessel, who at least is one of the few bright spots on the last-place team.

”We seem to have hopefully hit bottom,” Leafs forward Jamal Mayers said after yesterday’s tense practice at the Mastercard Centre. “There’s a feeling of disgust that this could happen.

“It’s not acceptable. There’s no other way to paint it. There are no moral victories.”

There aren’t many of the other kind, either, as the playoffs are quickly skidding from pipe dream to statistical improbability.

With a current losing streak that hit five games on Thursday, the Leafs have won three times and are on pace for just 49 points. Mathematically, that would match the 48 points accumulated in 80 games by the 1984-85 team as the worst in club history.

While number crunching has become a blood sport for irate followers of the morose franchise, it carries some weight given the season will be more than a quarter done after tonight’s clash at the Air Canada Centre with the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals.

While few might expect the current pace to last, raise your hands if you would have guessed there would be just three wins at this point?

Not since the 1999-2000 Atlanta Thrashers rang up 39 points (with just 14 wins) has an NHL team been so putrid. Nowhere close, in fact.

How low can it go? If the Leafs do indeed finish with 49 points, they would be 45 or so out of a playoff spot./p>

Meanwhile, by all accounts, the flight home Thursday night from Carolina was a miserable one, with “a fair number of expletives” as one player put it yesterday.

You can argue that the Leafs were robbed in the 6-5 shootout loss to the ‘Canes - allowing a goal with three seconds left to force overtime plus the phantom four-minute penalty to Ian White earlier in the third period. But the reality is the Leafs squandered three and two-goal leads.

“I don’t think it’s right to let it roll off your back,” Leafs forward Lee Stempniak said yesterday. “Losses matter and they’re hard to swallow. You’ve got to hate losing.”

No one finds it more revolting than Leafs general manager Brian Burke, who less than a year into his tenure is taking his lumps these days.

But until Burke is convinced someone on the Marlies would seriously help or that a veteran has no more hope and thus can be waived, what can he do?

“It would give us a boost, but because we are kind of limited, we can’t send anybody down,” Wilson said.

For now. If the losing lasts much longer there will be no choice, something both Burke and Wilson willingly acknowledge.

“We have three wins in 20 games,” Wilson said of one of the roughest extended periods of his coaching career. “It’s not fun, I can tell you that.”

Dear son, welcome to life as a Leaf fan

The horror...Last month my wife and I welcomed our first son to the world. Like any proud father, I didn't want to waste any time teaching him the important values that I hope he'll carry with him throughout his life. So a few days ago, I sat him down for a very important discussion.

Hey little guy. Wakey wakey. Daddy wants to share something very important with you.

Do you see this friendly looking blue thing right here? That's a Toronto Maple Leafs logo. It probably looks familiar, since there's at least one on every item of clothing you own right now. And that's because you're going to be a Maple Leafs fan, just like your dad.

I want to tell you all about the Leafs. I want to teach you about Dave Keon and Borje Salming and Mats Sundin and Teeder Kennedy. So let's look through daddy's old scrapbook together and I'll tell you all about it.

Look, here's a picture of George Armstrong. He was called "Chief". He's scoring the clinching goal into an empty net to beat the Montreal Canadiens. Look how happy everyone looks! Do you see all the people cheering? They're happy because they just saw the Leafs win their most recent Stanley Cup.

What's that? No. No, there's aren't any pictures of this that are in color.

Because they didn't have color photography back in 1967, that's why. Well I'm sorry, that's just the way it is. Look, if you want to see them in color so badly, go ask your sister if you can borrow her crayons.

It's not like Leaf fans haven't had anything to cheer about since then. Let me tell you about 1993. That's the year that the Leafs went on a magical run and almost made the Staley Cup finals. They had Dougie Gilmour's spinorama and Felix Potvin's brilliance and Wendel Clark punched out Marty McSorley's eyeball. It was probably the greatest stretch of hockey I've ever seen.

Yes, that's right, 1993.

Well of course that seems like a long time ago to you, you're two weeks old. Right, OK, I guess that was 17 years ago, sure. Nice math skills, Archimedes, do you have a point?

Look, I never said being a Leaf fan was going to be easy, OK? But I'm not raising you to be some sort of front-running bandwagon jumper who elbows his way to the head of the line when the team is winning and then bails out as soon as times get tough. The world already has too many Senator fans.

No, you're going to stick this out until the bitter end, and here's why: It will be worth it some day.

If you don't believe me, ask a Chicago Blackhawks fan. They hadn't won a Stanley Cup since 1961, but that all changed this season. For a few years they finished in last place just like the Leafs, but now they have a roster full of young stars that they drafted and their team is …

What? No. No, the Leafs can't just go out and do that too. Because they don't have any draft picks, that's why. Because they gave them all to another team, OK? I don't know, because it seemed like a good idea at the time!

No, daddy is not crying. Hey, isn't there an episode of The Backyardigans you should be watching?

Look, kid. I know it seems hopeless. I know it even seems a little bit cruel to raise you as a Leafs fan. I know that whenever you see Daddy thinking about the Leafs he's making angry faces and muttering mean words and drinking from one of his special grownup bottles.

But here's the thing, son: Some day, the Leafs are going to win the Stanley Cup. It won't happen this year, or the next, or even the one after that. But it will happen one day. And when that day arrives, all the near misses and the lost seasons and the jokes and the blown calls and the sleepless nights will just make it all that much sweeter.

When that moment comes, some day a very long time from now, you're going to appreciate it in a way that only a true fan can. Because you'll have earned it.

That's why you're going to be a Leaf fan, son, whether you like it or not. But if those nice folks from Children Services ask, you chose this of your own free will, OK?

Now let's go get you changed. I think somebody made a Toskala in his diaper.
