I'm not a big MTV or MMM or CMT video person (other than live performances) but I did really like the treatment and images on Gord's last one, Inspiration Lady
If you have any faves (current or from yesteryear) for recommending I thought it would be good to have a thread compiling a variety of links...I imagine most can be found at youtube or other video sites
I like this song and this video quite a lot...it's all a video really needs to be, imo

I'm a big fan of his since seeing him in January at the LIghtfoot trib.show at Hugh's Room.
His name is jonathon and his middle name is after his grandfather-Royal.. I think that's what he told me..

OK I'll bite
I have many favoUrite musc videos that I could submit but for now I will settle for the one that never fails to please me for its vivacity
a superbly happy performance of the 1985 Bryan Adams hit that was a number one in 2002 for the lively and lovely young Dutch singer Dominique Van Hulst
YouTube - DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do - Heaven (Live @ viva 2002)
john, nice looking gal...did she have an actual 'video' to support her #1 single? ...yeah, an Adams classic anthem...i didn't mean performance videos, but i wasn't very clear about what i meant obviously, lol....well ok then, photos slide shows and you fave youtube non-GL covers (we have a place for that) or live performance videos are welcome too
with that said, i'll add one (this is not what i meant by a 'produced video')... here's a guy who has multi-talent and i dig the arrangement...when you hear a pop tune played on trafitional instruments you can really tell a good melodic composition from the rest of the techno junk out there:
YouTube - Human - The Killers - Violin and Piano Cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVzeU39zVE8)
ok, it's a bit busy/muddy/raw/a bit out of tune, i love that

I love the Royal Wood video, jj. I like the song too - the singer has a cool voice.
This was my favorite from my teen years in the '80s when I was addicted to MTV. I watched enough videos to last me a lifetime. It was popular at the time - they even did a spoof about it on Family Guy.
Warning: Synthesizer alert!

hey jim, catch the tom russel GL anecdote that Sir john posted, fun...nice tune, btw...any broadcast videos out there?
patti/jessie, i guess the kalediscope(sp?) and time laspe images are impressive and have been around a while (even consumer level video cams will do that now)...feel free to drop a intro saying what impresses you about the video...where's the human element of the creativity? these seem to be lacking on the storyboard end of things but no one says a video needs to have one, i'm at a loss for what young folks and/or boomers are looking for when it comes to 'video' these days
here's one that is nice treatment wise and intros the public to Edwards 'edge' but it's a case where after hearing the song in advance, the video leaves me confused as to the message...it's all backwards and the song should be called 'Back to YOU' i suppose...anyhow, you can't go wrong whenever an old diner, motel or gas station is used as the backdrop:) btw, i think the male casting is weak here, imo

who is really missing from the video is her hubby, colin cripps...very talented, great stage presence and very cool

Well jj, Murray released at least one video that I do remember viewing a lot on Much Music in the 80's. 'Never Did Like That train'.
I remember his interview on The Don Harron Show (CTV), where he told Don, for that video he was chased by police cars they had rented from The Littlest Hobo Productions. :)

sundreme, i don't know if that link is very suitable for this site but i will say it's probably the sort of thing i should not be clicking on first in the morn... i guess by the disclaimer i was expecting some sort of disgruntled urban video where a guy exclaims a 4 letter word at some point (rather than performing one)
rm, odd but mesmerizing and creative... a fine blend of visuals and song...i had only ever heard a more uptempo version previously... there's only one beck
jjo, i liked the vid!...you can tell it's dated...ya wouldnt be allowed to smoke in jail these days (or even on the property now:eek:) and the boys in blue would have tasered him
i was watching early morning cbc news last weekend on rabbit ears (no, i didnt say 'wearing them', however halloween is coming!) and when i sonn after looked up, there was an episode of good ole Littlest Hobo...didnt knwo it still ran...i said to myself, 'now there's some fine Canadian acting!' lol
I just discovered this......interesting...... not exactly the imagery I conjured up 21 years ago......

Whilst I have already submitted one entry I see no rule saying that one is the maximum. only that jj intended the submissions to be of full "music video" status.I am therefore surprised that nobody has yet thought to offer what is I believe usually accepted as the first specific "music video" and the trendsetter
YouTube - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
However there is another way of looking at the aims of this thread. which whilst nominally was fave music videos has strayed off topic bit and included some humoUrous material. In fact many of my favourite youtube items are comedy ones especially those featuring British humour and my absolute top British comedian has to be the late Peter Sellers. He was the master mimic and provided the voices of most of the odd nall characters in the ground breaking Goon Show. So to return to the music video theme here is my favourite comedy music video. In it Peter takes the urine out of not only the Beatles but also Laurence Olivier by adapting a Beatles hit to the style and delivery of Larry's Shakespearean Richard III

There's something I wonder and i'd really like to know your thoughts on this.
Apparently this song was about Goldsboro comming of age with a much older woman when he was a teen and even lost his verginity by her.
Makes me wonder why he'd wanna share this with the rest of the world.
Was it something he was pround of or did he just feel he needed to mention this?
Wonder what his folks thought?
What's aslo interesting is besides the song being banned on some stations is it was released in 1973, but he wrote it 5 yeasr earlier and I guess must have been hesitant in recording and releasing it.

23
23 seconds, all things we love will die
23 magic, if you can change your life
Your tainted heart, my tainted love, repent now
How many times ?
As long as you live, how many times ?
The world will go around
He was a friend of mine, he was a son of god ... he was a son of a gun
23 seconds, in you I see a chance
23 magic, if you change the name of love
Your crazy heart, my crazy love, repent now
How many times ? As long as you wish
How many times ? The world will go around
How many times ? As long as you want
How many times ? The world will go around
He was a friend of mine, he was a son of a gun ... he was a son of god

i am glad the thread is active bit i must say, the definition and scope of what i meant by a video has broadened...but better that we are broad than narrow minded:)

Hey Affair, I hadn't seen this video, but I love this song. I tear up whenever I hear it on the radio. It's the finality of it all...so sad.
YouTube- Mike & The Mechanics - The living Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGDA0Hecw1k)
Someone told me years ago this song was about the lead singer's troubled relationship with his Dad and they never really patched things up.
very nice production but was never much on the choral type backup singing
just a minor note (i'm a big old, old Genesis fan and like some of their solo ventures): the lead singer is Paul Carrack not Mike Rutherford - Mike co-wrote the tune with another writer who had also lost his dad recently....Mike plays bass
btw, Carrack also did some solid live vocals on Hey You (the David Gilmour part) for The Wall- live in Berlin, Roger Waters production...a quality video
...i believe Mike and the Mechanics first release was Silent Running...Rutherford used Carrack on vocals for that one also

YouTube- John Legend - Ordinary People Cover by An Le
Notice how cheerfull she comes across.
Affair, thought you might dig this eastern and cheerful gal:
YouTube- Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me (cover) by ERIKA DAVID
she has her moment and nice tone along with solid phrasing
your old friend (who looks like the Hi School Musical latino) also tried this pop tune and does ok but needs a guitar tuner for starters...but she sings the tune better than the original artist also...most do
speaking of Swift, it seems obvious that her dueling girlfriend tune and especially video was ripped from Avril's earlier effort...that Avril sure is spunky, punky and sassy...i've never seen her videos til just browsing earlier
YouTube- Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
she pays the dual girlfriend roles (same concept Swift's people went with...i guess that was the video that got the disturbed Kanye guy all in a huff...maybe he had a point, lol)
GL was right though, Levine has some good little tunes...too bad she and her Evan guitar guy split (no, i don't mean the old sum41 hubby guy)...young talented duo

The song's nice though.
Of course I still don't quite get the song.
I know they're saying gold's not everything but where does Califonria come in on this?

I know they're saying gold's not everything but where does Califonria come in on this?
In 1849, Gold was discovered in California and people rushed there with dreams of making a fortune, but more often than not, these aspirations didn't pan out for many people and they wound up dejected and poorer than when they'd came
In the last century, California has become the entertainment capital and people flock there with dreams of becoming rich and famous in show business, but just like in the gold rush days, many if not most of the young dreamers find out that its not that easy.
So the gold represents the hopes of those who come to California seeking their fortune, and the phrase, "All the gold in California is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody else's name," is a caveat to all the hopefuls out there, warning them while there is fortune in California, its controlled by someone else and it will not come easy, and odds are not at all, and you might just wind up with dashed hopes and broken dreams like the Gold miners of 1849.

Interesting observation Touhy. we are now in the habit on a car journey of listening to the folk music on "The Village" channel on Sirius-XM satellite radio
I was very struck the other day to hear Teach Your Children sung as a solo for a change by Graham Nash. It was superb
I have no idea what album (if any) it was from and the nearest to a GN solo version that I could find on Youtube other than sundry covers is this short and sweet "lesson"

YouTube - King Straggler - 9 Dreams and Some Whistling
A campfire type tune
He and the young lead gal were nominated for acting awards this year for Winters Bone which I enjoyed as much as Melissa Leo in last years Frozen River indy film
I saw end of Oscars only and enjoyed the montage that played during Kings Speach audio byte
Were there live musical performances?
Anyhow that John Hawkes guy was less scary than most of the women in that film...then again, the lead character was a beautiful heroine

YouTube - The Hollies - Dear Eloise (promo)
There's another 1 of these for the same song but the sound quality of this one is better.
Sung mostly by Allen Clark, but the beginning and end of course sung by Graham.
I should also note that Jenifer Eccles was also the name of another song which was one of the last songs recorded by the group before Graham left.
I notice this track ( I previously posted the Rolling Stone live acoustic version, found it an interesting melody ) is being used commercially during HNIC spots
This is the video which seems to have been done in one long shot, neat
