I just read in today's news update that the boy was also sexually assaulted - I realize 'child horrors' like this goes on all over the world but this case had me thinking more so than usual about a few things:

fate - in just an hour, a joyful, summer, early evening scene of boys playing together on their bikes could suddenly change to such an extreme all for the act of one (I am assuming mentally ill) human - how can anyone possibly protect our innocent youths - it reminds me of the Mystic River film/story to a point, also of the Holly Jones real life story (where she was snatched right out of thin air without anyone noticing)

ripple - how the event will affect not only the child but the impact will be felt (already evident) by his fellow biking friends, mother, brother and other eye witnesses who will live with the images ...the one lady stated it best when she said how the image of the boy struggling and screaming as he was shoved into the trunk will stay with her the rest of her life ...I have a friend who 30 years later is still affected by a far more subtle but similar scene but with a more deadly ending for the child

action - the public, often so very passive an turning blind eyes, in this case were heroic in their quick response - I think this is the feel good part of this story, that and the requirement to have the inner trunk release mechanism on all new vehicles, on this continent anyway

rage - I'm over the initial rage I felt when reading about this and now wonder what other acts this 50 year old guy has committed during his adult life - I also might feel pity, perhaps this man was violated as a child and his recent evil action is a ripple from his distant youth

prevention - this is the thought that has me helplessly drawing a blank

The abductor deserves one fate. No, two: To be castrated with no anesthesia, and then to have his throat slit.

+ perhaps let those other nasty prisoners 'have a go' at him first

God bless those concerned witnesses who not only called police but followed the car. Predators have always been and will continue to be with us - no known cure so far - so it's imperative that the rest of us pay attention and watch out for those who are least able to protect themselves.

For those of us who have children or grandchildren this kind of news sends shock waves into communities. Tragically it continues to happen and the public reaction is always as what would be expected; one of outrage, vengeance and justifiably so. "We'll fix that guy so he'll never do it again." Problem is someone else will. That is of course unless we get serious about taking the bull by the horns.
My belief is the problem lies in the field of medical science. We need to find out exactly just what is it that makes these people tick? It's not normal to inflict harm on an innocent child. What went wrong in the functioning of the brains in these people. Surely there would be warning signs in their childhood or somewhere along the way. It would be interesting to know the history of these individuals. We know so little about the functioning of the human brain.
This problem will continue to fester until more money gets pumped into medical scientific research to hopefully and finally come up with a solution to put an end to a most destructive and horrific nightmare ever to be inflicted on a parent. Ron J.

And people used to wonder why I & my mum were so protective of my niece & nephew when they were little. I can still remember the day that my nieces school bus driver tried to kidnap her for the second time in as many weeks. The first time we figured he screwed up & couldn't remember the route as he was a sub. The second time, in our eyes, there was no mistake---the SOB was trying to kidnap her & if I hadn't been well on my way to the busstop, he'd have driven off with her. You can only imagine the rage I was in as I was pounding on the bus & cursing a blue streak, calling him everything but a child of God.

that it appears to be epidemic. And one that our civilized society -in this day and age, is still unable to prevent to the extent that it could please be greatly diminished and God, I wish, hope, pray...non existent.

I'm sure there have been such creatures since the beginning of time, but with the info age it seems there are more of them because more are reported, and in reality there are more of them. In the U.S., a hundred years ago, the population was approximately 88 million. Today, it's over 300 million. You're bound to find some bad seeds in that bunch.

When you stir in the Catholic church scandal, safe havens seem hard to find.

prevention might be similar as an insurmountable challenge to preventing terrorism... while additional resources would no doubt help, I think the best we can do is keep our eyes and ears open and react occordingly when something or someone seems a bit "off"

I understand that terrorist mentality mainly stems from brainwashing, so over the coming generations with cultural intervention, it's somewhat preventable, while pedophiles are full of complexities and can't be rehabilitated other than to condition them to suppress their instincts

you would think that the ease of access to child porn has had the exact opposite affect of suppressing the instincts of these individuals

again, no lack of articles out there on this and everything related...

CathyI wish my mum had that day. To this day, I wonder if that freak is still working around kids. I do know that my mum did call the school systems transportation office & let it be known that they had best do something about him or they'd be seeing her in court.
