OTTAWA – Canada Post says Bryan Adams and Stompin' Tom Connors will be featured in its 2009 stamp program as part of its Canadian Recording Artists series.

New Brunswick singer-songwriter Edith Butler and Quebec's Robert Charlebois will also be honoured.

Stamps featuring the singers will come out in June 2009.

To celebrate Black History Month next February, Canada Post will issue two stamps – one with Abraham Doras Shadd – reportedly the first black person to hold political office in Canada – and the other with Rosemary Brown, the first black woman elected to public office.

Other stamps will show Arctic explorer Captain Robert Bartlett, abstract expressionist Jack Bush, the first flight in Canada, the sacrifice of Canadian war heroes and Canadian inventions in sports including basketball and lacrosse.

Bob Waite with Canada Post says the mandate of the stamp program is to celebrate Canada and its diverse people, its major accomplishments, rich history, traditions and natural beauty.

OTTAWA - A pair of legendary New Brunswick musicians are getting their own postage stamps.

Stompin' Tom Connors and Edith Butler, an Acadian folk songbird who honed her skills in Moncton cafés during the 1960s, will be featured as part of Canada Post's Canadian Recording Artists stamp series.
Joining the pair are Canadian rocker Bryan Adams and Quebec singer Robert Charlebois.
The stamps featuring the singers will be released in June 2009.
The foursome was selected using specialized criteria by a special committee, which included stamp experts, students, executives and other members of the public.
"The artists must have attained worldwide recognition, must have an Order of Canada, and must have paved the way and helped bring the music industry to where it is today," said Canada Post spokeswoman Nicole Lemire.
Connors, whose tune The Hockey Song is a mainstay among fans of Canada's national pastime, was born in Saint John while Butler hails from Paquetville on the province's Acadian peninsula.
This is the second time Canada Post is scheduled to release stamps sporting the mugs of famous Canadian musician.
Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot were bestowed the honour in 2007.

Interesting to note that Stompin' Tom is from Saint John, New Brunswick as I have always associated him with Skinners Pond, Prince Edward Island. I now understand that he was born in NB but grew up in PEI with his adoptive family. Thanks for your post.

I have a video hosted by Murray McLaughlan entitled 'Floating Over Canada' where he flies across the country stopping along the way to feature Canadian artists. There is a great segment with Gordon Lightfoot in a canoe singing 'Gotta Get Away' but also has a segment featuring Edith Butler. Other notables are Ian Tyson, Buffy St. Marie and I believe Levon Helm although he's American.

I have that same video from a Canada Day Yuri. Very enjoyable to watch.

One concert that I would like to find is, "Olympic Team Benefit". The year was probably 1976, it was at Maple Leafs Garden, hosted by: Gordon Lightfoot, with guest, Murray McLaughlan, Liona Boyd, and Sylvia Tyson. I had no VCR yet in those days. He sang songs from his then new LP, "Summertime Dream."

I saw a little bit of it last night on "The Hour" maybe 5 seconds... lol

Edith Butler

Edith Butler said her grandmother once kept a spectacular philatelic collection, including rare finds from the Victorian era in an attic at the family home in Paquetville.
Butler was handed the collection when she was a kid and continued to build on it until she was 30 years old.
"Then I stopped," she said. "But when I see a stamp, I'm always fascinated. Stamps taught me about geography, history and politics."
And now, said Butler, stamps might teach a generation of new collectors about rock n' roll and Acadian music.
The folk music songbird, along with fellow New Brunswicker Stompin' Tom Connors, rock legend Bryan Adams and Quebec singer Robert Charlebois will be featured as part of Canada Post's Canadian Recording Artists stamp series.
The stamps are scheduled to be released in June 2009.
"When I heard I'd be on a stamp, I thought, 'Maybe in 100 years kids in my family will be looking at the stamp and say that woman was my great-great-great aunt," she said with a laugh. "I'm really happy. It's a beautiful day."
Butler has spent the past eight years writing and playing music while tending her acreage near Magog, Que.
She said she found out about the stamp yesterday when she opened an e-mail from the Times & Transcript.
Butler said her career took off while studying in Moncton during the 1960s where she soon became a regular on French radio airwaves and CBC's Singalong Jubilee.
She still takes to the stage regularly throughout Quebec and is scheduled to perform in Bouctouche on her birthday on July 27.
Butler said performing has become a joy because after 60 years of singing and writing songs, she's finally managed to master her art.
"It's so much fun because I have nothing to prove," she said. "I just walk on stage and people are already smiling and clapping their hands. I just do my art and if some money comes with it, that's fine."
This is the second time Canada Post is scheduled to release stamps sporting the mugs of famous Canadian musician.
Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot were bestowed the honour in 2007.
