I think someone needs to light a fire under Benni Hemm Hemm....lol.
I mean, there is the slow version and then there is the really, really, really, really slow version....

Canadian Idol girl is good!

Jesse Joe

That Canadian Idol girl is Elena Juatco, and she performed that incredible version of EMR while Mr. Gordon Lightfoot was in the front rows with his daughter Meredith. The following night she was voted off. I still today cant understand that vote.

If I was in managing new talents I would have sign her to a record deal right after that performance. She was the best that particular season. But a major part of Canada did not think so... :(

I know what you mean...they never pick my favorite on American Idol.
It's kind of frustrating to watch.

All of those are good.
I love The Kingston Trio. What a beautiful cover of EMR that is.

Eva Cassidy sounds a little like Dido....great voice.

Jesse Joe

Sorry to have to correct you Nighingale, but I too thought that was Eva Cassidy. But it was corfidian brink- that advise me a while ago that it is actually a girl maybe named Lisa who is doing Eva Cassidy's version of EMR. I believe the great Eva Cassidy is no longer with us. She had an awesome voice. Please do listen to the next video, this is Eva Cassidy, she has the voice of an angel... :)

That was lovely...she really did have the voice of an angel.

It's very sad that she isn't with us any longer.:(

I had never heard of her before so it was easy for me to be confused by the YouTube video heading.

Don't be sorry for correcting me, I don't mind. I have learned a great deal about other artist's music from you and others that post here.
See, now I know I like Eva Cassidy and can look for her music.:)

The last vocal group had good harmony.
It would be interesting to know hom many covers of that song there are.
Maybe a few million or so....lol.

He's pretty good!
Sounds like an authentic folk singer and plays the guitar pretty well.

I like his backdrop picture.

Jesse Joe
05-11-2008, 07:21 AM
He can teach you how to play guitar. He's a great player plays practically all of Gordon Lightfoot songs very well. :) I beleive he has an instuctional video , which I thought was available at Val's Web Site.

But after checking I saw that the guys name is Pete Huttlinger on Val's Site so I may be wrong here. Im sure mentioning Val's Site has brought a smile to her face... www.gordonlightfoot.com (http://www.gordonlightfoot.com)

Val if you can confirm this please... Is this the guy who's video I posted, the same instructional guitar video on your Site ?

Nightingale

I have always thought it looked rather hard to play the guitar...never tried though so I couldn't say if I could learn or not.

I have visited Val's site...it's awesome! She has tons of interesting stuff there and it's one of my favorite places to go.

I like this guy!
There's something about his style that makes him sound very "authentic" if that makes any sense.
I like listening to a man and his guitar with nothing else....that's got to be harder than having a whole band backing you up.

"It's a great one to play on a 12 string".

I'm sure it is but it looks like it would be difficult...is it?

Jesse Joe
05-20-2008, 07:40 AM
No in fact it is very easy, 3 guitar chords will get you a long way. Now the picking is another thing.

"I like listening to a man and his guitar with nothing else"... Anne Nightingale

This may have sounded funny if you added the word on at the end, or maybe not ?

I agree tho, a singer and his guitar is the best way I like listening to an artist. It really shows is raw talent... That's why "East Of Midninght" is not his best Album for me anyway. :)

Nightingale
05-22-2008, 01:48 AM
LOL....if we looked hard enough on YouTube we could probably find a "man with his guitar and nothing else on". Who knows what he'd be singing though....

So, the picking is the hard part...didn't really know that.
I think the guitar in "If I Could" sounds really amazing.
Every time I sit and listen to the U A collection I find something else to love on it.

I take it "East of Midnight" is a little overdone?
I will have to see what I think of it.

RM
05-22-2008, 02:53 AM
One thing to note about "East Of Midnight" is that this was Lightfoot's production. I believe he has stated that he did all of the charts except for "Anything For Love", which was a collaboration with David Foster. It speaks to his musical talents. Overdone ? I think so.......I like the bare bones version of the song "East Of Midnight" much better than the album version and they sound completely different. But it was Lightfoot's idea to produce it in that fashion.

Those 5 UA Albums are real treasures. I had them when I was still in school, grade (9). They bring me back to those days sometimes, when I listen to them. :)

That's right RM,

In "Anything For Love" Lightfoot's voice is almost burried... David Foster and his Yamaha DX-7... lol

Nightingale

"The Streak"...lol.
Yes, I guess that would fit pretty well...

I laughed when I saw your reason for the edit.
The only problem is that I can't get the image of Cat Stevens playing his guitar in the nude out of my head...it's scary!

Yes, I know what you mean about music taking you back to a different time.
There are lots of songs that do that for me.
I have a song for just about every important moment in my life.

RM,
I guess every artist stretches his wings a little from time to time so it makes sense that Gordon wanted to try his hand at something a little different.
I am not sure if I have heard anything other than "Anything for Love" (which I am not crazy about) off of this cd.

David Foster is a litte dramatic in alot of his music. I like his work with Josh Groban but that is a whole different type of music.

I will try and find some "East of Midnight" songs and give them a listen.
One thing I do like about Gordon is his diversity.
He really is amazing!

That's some great shots of Elvis and he sounds good singing that song.:)

I saw his last concert in Indianapolis just before he died.:(
I wasn't a huge Elvis fan but I did think he was an amazing icon of our times. I like some of his earlier music the best.
I guess he had kind of a sad life...unless, of course, he really is alive somewhere and just hiding from all of us....lol.

Thanks Jesse Joe:)

Maybe it's the song more than who sings it?

Hi Jesse,
Early Morning Rain is one of those great songs that either gender can sing and it sounds great.
I LOVE the Eva Cassidy version..such a beautiful voice and guitar in her cover.

It's all good, my friend. That song just goes right to your heart no matter who sings it.

The best version that I heard up to this day is by Canadian Idol finalist a few years ago, Elena Juatco. Ang Mr. Gordon Lightfoot was in the audience w/ daughter Meredith & friend. I had posted it earlier but will put it here again for you to know who she is... ;)

BTW the following night she was voted off ??? Never did understand that one !

Hi Jesse,
Yes, that young Idol singer has an amazing voice. It's hard to believe that she got voted off :( I would think she would have a future in music regardless of them giving her the boot. :)

The Elvis Presley cover is good, too. He has a pretty good voice.

There is something about the guy that reminds me of a Southpark character...lol.
It's his expressions or the way he scrunches his face up...not being mean, it's just kind of cute and funny. :)

imo, she struggled in a few other genres but did well considering her competition--- definitely had the most personality of the lot and as a result ended up with a job as CTV entertainment correspondent

still think the most under rated 'booted off' was on CI1, Klippert

i confess, i enjoy PVRing, then sifting through CI/AI shows

Thanks for the information, jj. It's nice to know that Elena ended up with a good job out of the deal. :)

Billy can sing :) Nice version of IYCRMM...very enjoyable to hear.

I will be glad when American Idol starts it's shows again. I miss it. :(
Not much good tv lately.

Yes, Jesse Joe...I think if someone is singing Gordon Lightfoot it should automatically give them extra points...lol. He is brilliant. :)
