This is a clip from my Transcript, that I had save, because it was relating to a story about a Gordon Lightfoot Web Site. Everything Lightfoot I save.:headbang:

Only to find out some years later, when I joined Corfid that the story was about our very own Sir John Fowles... It's a small world. :)

Like John told me last year, this was his 15 minutes of fame. :)

Be that as it may, I think that it was a fantastic article, as well as showing how good a friend Sir John has in the lady.

Ah, but there is more to the story!!
The Wedding Present! The Lightfoot Group (pre Corfid) came together in cyberspace and organized a quilting bee. Squares of fabric were sent out to all Lightheads who wished to participate and each designed their square with a Lightfoot song or theme. The squares were mailed back and beautifully assembled. It was HUGE! The final center square added was one signed by Gord himself and his band members. If I recall correctly, the finished quilt was presented to John an Susan backstage at a concert and with the quilt spread out, Gord walked around guessing and commenting on the artwork.

This truly was an act of love by the group to a couple very much admired.

I hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes by posting a few photos of the assembly process here. (Like most of my life, discs with other photos are packed away and unaccessible at this time - perhaps we could persuade John & Susan to post some assembled photos, and of Gord backstage admiring it.)

My apologies for not recalling all who were involved in the organization and assembly.

Now THAT is what I call art! ANd the workmanship that's seen there is unbelieveable. Something like that takes some phenominal skills & patience. I mean, I make some nice quilts, but that one is a work of art. Beautiful!

Yuri, you are not stepping on anyone's toes. Infact you have given me a perfect opening for a "rest of the story" post.

The Wedding Quilt was a brainstorm of our own Jenney. She sent out the call to all known Lightheads at the time and the response was amazing. I was her humble assistant when it came time to assemble the priceless piece of art and was lucky enough to be backstage at the Norwalk CT concert when it was presented. It was a not-to-be-topped backstage experience. Personally I made a SDYS square as that is a fav song of Susan's and ended apologizing to Gord as he was checking it out. I changed the lyrics (and the carving on the tree) to "John Loves Susan". He looked up and gave me a look that sent shivers up my spine. <sigh>

And the experience gave us a new shipping term...Yurrier. It seems a certain square from Canada took a longer than expected delivery time...LOL ;)

Yuri, thank you for bringing up this memory. I know I so enjoyed producing 'my' square and was so thrilled to see the complete whole - spread wide at the Char-B-Q in May 2001. Oh boy - what amazing times we have had and hopefully will still have. The Wedding Quilt should be under lock and key because I know I am not the only one who craves it for herself ;)

Thanks again, for the memory.

And what a weep-fest it was for Susan..
;)
Sir John needed eye-drops..

Sadly I had no chance that day to spirit the quilt away and claim it had been stolen and that I was totally innocent in said theft..
lol

I had just become involved in the group when the quilt was being made and dearly wish I'd been bold enuf to ask if I could participate. I'll have to rectify that with an appropriate Wedding Gift asap..
hmmm...I'll have to put on my thinking cap for this one..

Char, you bad girl you;)! I will admit that it is a treasure, both as a Lightfoot commemorative item & as a sign of how everyone feels about Sir John 7 his lady.

I rarely visit Small Talk, but boy am I glad I did today. I am awe-struck by that story! How absolutely incredible! I would LOVE to see more photos from the whole quilt-making process, the backstage presentation, and the happy couple... I would love to see the whole quilt for myself (or at least close-up photos of each square) to try to figure out the meaning of each one... John, can you feature one square per day or two? What fun that would be!! please please pretty please

More Quilt Photos,
Firstly thanks to Jesse Joe for recalling this event/topic. Once again my apologies if I step on anyones toes. I had previously touched upon the subject of the quilt in an long ago, previous post and suggested that the newer members of the group might like to see the quilt. As there was no response from John, I took it as J & S may wish to keep the topic low key. My apologies to both if this is the case but since the topic is already "out there", I'm taking the chance of posting these photos.

Of course wonderful Jenny was responsible for organizing the quilting bee but I didn't want to insult anyone by leaving out all the other people responsible for making this a reality.
Yes, I guess I was slow in getting my squares back to the assembly line, thanks for waiting. You coined the term "Yurier"?? for my tardiness?? - what a laugh!!!!
Now with the apologies out of the way, check out the event from 2000.
(I have more but these are the best of the bunch)

One more apology,
Apologies are what I seem to be what I'm good at these days.
I forgot to give credit to Lighthead 'Darin' from the old 'Yahoo' Lightfoot group who I believe was responsible for taking these wonderful photos and had the generosity to share them with all.

This is just the coolest thing--heartwarming and cool! Makes me wonder what other stories you veterans have stashed away in the archives.

And those photos would have been taken just a short time prior to the event which nearly took our hero's life?

What a wonderful story and effort from all who participated and supported this gift. I actually recall Jenney telling me about the project back then and she may have even emailed photos to me. But it has been so long ago now and until reading these posts...I had forgotten all about it!

It's nice to know of the individual experiences/thoughts of those who made the squares and then those when the quilt was completed and presented. A great, altruistic effort!
