Hi I'm new

I just joined this list and wanted to say hi to all of you.

I heard Gordon Lightfoot's music for the first time a few weeks ago when my friends took me to his concert at the canyon club in agoura hills in california. It was so amazing. I was instantly hooked. I can not believe I missed out on his music for so long. I guess my excuse could be that I grew up in Germany and he is not that famous over there. Anyway I'm taking a few days off work in June and I'll go and see him again in Houston. Are any of you going to that concert,too?

You are so lucky to have friends who took you to a Gordon Lightfoot concert. I too was at the Canyon Club. :) I was the person who handed Gordon the roses after the first couple of songs. I was in Anaheim the night before. Also at the two concerts after at the casinos in the desert.

I remember you. I thought that was ever such a wonderful idea to bring the roses and he looked really toched about it. Wow, I'm yealous that you got to go to all his shows out here. I'm sure I'll try to do that the next time he comes to CA, if my husband does not put his foot down.
Did he have the same sets for all the shows or did he have different ones?

Well Kerstin,
I have been to over 30 GL concerts over the years and have never written down the set list. I tried so hard one of the nights last month. When Gordon comes out on stage something takes over and I just drink in the music.
:) He mixed the songs up a bit and did one different here and there but the sets were pretty much the same.

I am trying to fit in a couple of more concerts this year too. Texas does not fit in our schedule so I will have to study dates and try to figure out where we will be.

It seems the older I get the faster times goes. I need to schedule a knee replacement this year but want to find out if there is any chance Gordon and guys will be back this way. I'll let you know when I find out.

how long have you been a fan of GL? Must have been quite a while to have gone to so many shows.
From the concert schedule I've seen on the internet it does not look like they are coming back this way this year. Texas looked kind of the closest. Of course in my case it helped that I have relatives over there that I can drag out to the concert as my husband has to stay home to babysit our three year old.
Did you wait to meet him after the show at the canyon club? I saw quite a few people waiting by his tour bus and now I'm kicking myself that I did not do the same.

Hello Kerstin,

I have been a Lighthead for at least 30 years. I made all my friends take turns driving and seeing concerts when I was younger. When I married my husband 17 years ago he had heard about some of my "adventures". :D I would make my friends hide in bushes for hours waiting for Gordon to get in his limo after the press and friends got to visit with him after the concert. The friend who was driving would chase the limo and when we reached the hotel I would get out of the car and talk to him for a few minutes. Then ask for a hug and leave.

Boy, what a crazy girl I was. :)
I hope all this makes sense. Sometimes things get lost in typing and not talking.

I'd love to get to a show out west but will have to be happy with the ones I can attend in the Toronto area until May 2008..this Saturday I'll be in Niagara Falls on Saturday.

I would have loved to go to the Niagara Falls concerts, too. Three shows in a row AND I could have visited the Falls at the same time! The photos that Jesse posted looked amazing. But it is a bit far away. PLease post about the concert. Would love to know how it was. Do you live in Toronto? Did you ever go to any of the Massey Hall concerts? I read they are really special. If there is a concert coming up there I'll have to brainwash my husband into babysitting our son and letting me go.

I am bugging my husband to go to Texas but I don't think he will agree. :( I have not given up hope. I'm not sure what other concerts I will get to this year. Flying is very expensive especially if you don't have relatives to visit and stay with. Time will tell where I will go.

Regarding after the Canyon Club concert, I am sorry but "what do you think"?

would be great if you could make it to Texas,too! Keep working on it. I do have some spare tickets actually.
I was able to book a flight on my husbands frequent flyer miles. Those are the only advantage of him having to go on business trips all the time.
About the Canyon Club: I thought so! Maybe you can give me some advise before I go to Houston.

I guess: how to meet Gordon Lightfoot without making a complete blubbering fool of myself would be a good start. (I'm not quite sure how to use those nice smiley faces you put in your posts otherwise there would be a blushing red one here right now, which is kind of what I look like at this moment)
Of course my additional problem is that I kind of forget all my English when I get nervous.
You don't have to leave the concert before it ends to be at the back door on time do you? I would hate to miss part of the show. I guess I would have to look at the place when I get there.

Hello My Friend Kerstin,

I definately have an obsession with The Man. A friendly warning is be careful. It gets worse, much, much worse. For me it has been a truly wonderful experience and makes life fun. I watched and listened for a few years before I met people who introduced me to Gordon. :)

Finally at 55 I can talk to Gordon and those wonderful men in the Orchestra without forgetting how to speak. :D

I have the United artist collection on CD, I think that includes the first 4 records. I love that CD, esp. "Did she mention my name". I'm trying to get my band to play that, but they haven't decided yet.

Sounds great! Do you sing,too? I do some harmony singing, but I don't think I would have the guts to sing by myself. Then I also like the challenge of getting the harmony just right. It's fun.
What I always wanted to know is: how is a 12 string tuned. Is it just tuned like a 6 string with double strings like the mando or does it have a special tuning?

No I can't sing very well. :redface: I thought I could sing as well as Gord, until I was about 13, but then my voice changed. :D Now forget it!!!

Hello Kerstin,

I definately like all the songs on Salute but then I totally like every song Gordon has done. I even like songs that most people don't.

Playing the guitar was what I did when I was younger. Now my hands hurt with arthritis if I play for any length of time. :(

My husband and I make kaleidoscopes to try and earn $$ and my hands are pretty tired at the end of the day.

My fav singer was Glen Campbell, until 1969, when I bought my first Lightfoot LP. Did She Mention My Name. I only knew the song, "Black Day In July." That was the reason I bought that LP. :rolleyes:

But as I listen to the LP, song after song, it didn't take long, for me to get hooked. :eek:

Been a Lightfoot fan ever since. Got all the LP's, {16} cassettes, {14} 8 track tapes, and every CD's available... Plus many interviews, ASO. ;)

Still like Glen Campbell, but only have 2 LP's. :redface: Today I also really enjoyed John Mellencamp. :cool:

To answer your question, yes I was 13 when I started listening to Lightfoot. I will be 52 at the end of 2007.

No Im not a particular great guitar player. Yes I do finger pick. I try to play Lightfoot style.

If it sounds like Lightfoot style, is another thing... :D


Really like to play, 'Restless', 'Knotty Pine,' 'Morning Glory, 'all in the key of 'A'. And 'Early Morning Rain,' w/ Capo up 2nd fret, in the 'D' chord w/ open low 'E' string.

Gordon has said in an interview that the 'A' chord was his favorite guitar chord, mine has always been the first guitar chord I learned, the 'D' chord.

wow, seems like once a Lightfoot fan always a Lightfoot fan. Where did you get hold of interviews? I saw some in the archive of a Canadian TV station, I forget what it is called right now.

I think I might give finger picking a try, too. I did fail to learn how to do banjo rolls and gave that up after a few fruitless attempts, but maybe guitar is different. Do they have instruction websides on Lightfoot guitar playing?

How did you first get interested in playing the mandolin. I don't think I have ever know anyone who has played one of those.

I just read that you checked out our website. I am glad you like the scopes. Maybe one day this summer we could get together and you can play a little song for me and then look at some of our kaleidoscopes. I have cousins that live in Woodland Hills and it is only an hour and a half drive. :cool:

Is your 12 string a Gibson,too? I have a Gibson J-50 which I bought when I visited the States for the first time. I really like it, eventhough in bluegrass music it is kind of frowned upon. Haven't played it in years though.

I loved the kaleidoscopes. They're beautiful. Nothing like the one I used to have as a kid which was just some kind of cardboard construction you could turn and then some pieces of coloured glass would move inside and form patterns. I wonder if my parents still have it.
Yes, let's get together. Sounds like fun. I always thought Orange County was much further away from Woodland Hills than it actually is. I 1/2 hours is not so bad.
When I first started liking bluegrass music I wanted to play the banjo, but I was totally hopeless at it. Then I heard Bill Monroe play one of his breakneck speed mandolin instrumentals and that's why I started playing the mando. It's not so difficult to learn. Not like the banjo. Sometimes I think playing the mandolin keeps me sane because it is so relaxing. But some people would argue about my sanity. :)

Well, I used to play guitar for about 7 years before I started playing the mandolin and I haven't played it again until yesterday when I dusted it off and tried it again. I'm a bit rusty at it to say the least, but I enjoyed it a lot so i think I'll try learning a few Lightfoot songs. How about you? Do you play?
Yes, I do read TAB. I think I would be totally lost without it, eventhough I do read music, but it's too much work.
Of course I like "If you could read my mind", but the first one I would like to learn is Don Quixote. I'm totally hooked on that one.

Like you,I never knew Gordon's works either until 2001 when I bought the Songbook Box Set. I'd heard his U.S. "hits" but from 1974 on never really got into his stuff.

I still don't know what made me wamt to have that box set,since I'd had a handful of his LPs for awhile but never really played them. :confused:

Whatever the reason,I'm so glad I did becaue I get to talk to all of the people on here and of course,just attended my second concert on Jan. 28th. Met him again and got pictures & 2 signed albums.

Hi, Kerstin. I've been playing guitar since I was about 8 years old. Let's see... 44 years now. Wow. That really doesn't seem possible!

I keep saying I'd like to give the mandolin a try. I play fiddle, which uses the same tuning and fingering. Everytime I go into the local music store, I'm so tempted to buy one. One of these days I'll just break down and do it.

Don Quixote, huh? You aren't picking an easy one, that's for sure. I play it, but I usually play lead on that one, and I've never tabbed it out. It would be quite complicated.

Why don't you mail me your e-mail addy, to cathy@cathycowette.com, and I'll send my tabs to IYCRMM. It's a much easier picking pattern, a good one to start on.

Derek Kidd, a newsgrouper, and I recorded DQ a few years ago, at a house concert at Val Magee's place, and we played it once at an open mic. It's a great song!

Looks like Gordon Lightfoot is more famous over here in Germany as I thought, oops. Maybe I can plead ignorance by the fact that he made his tour over here when I ws 2 years old.
The Bear Family label is actually not in Hamburg, which is where I am at the moment, but in Hambergen, which is a few hours away from there. Post me a list of all the CDs you are looking for and I will see if I can find them. Are you in England?

I was delighted today to find that Kerstin had been able to read my posting whilst in Hamburg and have replied via a private
message.but I forgot to say that I do have all three Bear Family CDs, or suggest that should she be able to negotiate a
worthwhile discount for a bulk purchase no doubt other corfidites would be happy to buy them from her after she gets back.
In my reply here I also omitted to mention that Melissa Joe member # 490 who also resides in Texas (Austin) is an accomplished
guitarist and renders exquisite covers of GL songs especially "Heaven Help The Devil"
