Wayne Rostad

'On the Road Again' goes off the air

A Gemini-award-winning CBC show has been quietly pulled off the air after a 20-year run. "On the Road Again," hosted by Wayne Rostad, will be broadcast for the last time tonight.

The show has sent Rostad across Canada in search of interesting Canadians - including a man who built his own submarine in the Prairies and Inuit children playing golf in Nunavut. There was no formal announcement on the cancellation, but the show plans to put together its own farewell package.

Rostad, 59, tells the Globe and Mail that the reason given for the show's cancellation was lack of budget, but some are speculating that it's part of CBC's effort to draw in younger viewers. At one time the show drew nearly one million viewers, but has recently been getting 300,000.

I of course don't know that one...
but do you recall the Canadian show,"The Beachcombers" from the early 1970's up into the 1990's? I had no idea it was on that long.

I used to watch that when I was really little. About 1974/75 & although I was in Erie,PA
we could receive Ontario's Channel 11. I didn't understand it but I liked that it was set by the ocean.

I also recall some kid show with a puppet that was always hollering "Harvey Wallbanger!" & it was hosted by Vincent Price. Kinda scary.

Lastly,I even recall a show where there was an animated cartoon of someone teaching to count numbers in (I assume) French-Canadian!

You recall these Jess or anyone?

Yes Borderstone, I was a loyal fan of The Beachcombers. Really enjoyed it, that was taped in Western Canada...

I however dont remember, the scary one of which you speak...

The french one was probably Chez Helene as Charlene, posted. Wasn't a fan of that one...

Then in the mornings, there was Casey Jones, and Forest Rangers, they were fun to watch...

Thank you both,Charlene & Jess!

In case you guys are interested,i did a review (of what I could recall) of "The Beachcombers" on IMDB. It wasn't easy but I really had to pull out the magic memory hat for it. It's a bit vauge but I did it. :)

Boy,The Hilarious House of Frightenstein,I never would have rememebred that name! Unitil now,I just called it "Harvey Wallbanger".

That pic on the site is the first I've seen that puppet since late 1976! Wow! Can't believe I used to be kinda scared of that!

As for Chez' Helene, only 15 minutes?
Wow,I must have turned the channel at just the right time.
I remember this much,(excuse the spelling) Wah,daw,tre',qua...that's it 1 through 4! ;)

This is the second time this week I've regained a piece of the past that I'd forgotten. On the 23rd,I received an E-mail from a San Diego school secretary who let me know that the '78-'79 school year started Sept. 5th...

That's important becasue it helped me recall the axtual day I first saw & fell for a girl in my 5th grade class! Sept. 6th,1978! :)

Anyhow,thanks again guys!

wow, Romper Room and then Chez Helene back when we got 2 channels:)

thanks for the great links, once again...terrific

I watch Frightenstein (was billy van Jewish? lol) for years before i realized he did all the characters, wow...i only had to listen to Phil Hendrie for a few minutes before i knew he was talking to himself, lol

the Librarian was my fave character, introduced by Vincent (my first does of Dr Phibes, heh)...Igor, lol..it's still on Drive In and Space channels

Billy Van seemed so young to have passed, i remember the family watching him and other locals on Party Game during dinner and homework

Ernie and Bob are legendary, reruns are awaiting my wee one when the time is right...move over Dora, lol
