After somewhat unwittingly starting the fracas about picture displaying,I have promised both Char and Florian that I would not say anything more to inflame or prolong the situation,
I had however prepared a reply, the main impact of which was to try to apologise for aggravating everybody and also to state that I am working on a suitable thumbnail/free web site tutorial as a better way to bring scads of pictures to reader's voluntary attention
Nevertheless I have decided to start this topic to stress a useful dodge to avoid the problem of so many pictures being displayed, which as a "dial-upper" still I also find irritating
--------------------------------------------------
I have recently become aware that each and every posting to a topic has an individual location address
and if you "subscribe" to a topic the very nice and obviously extremely busy webmaster at corfid has nothing better to do all day (only joking Florian!!) but carry out a full time 24/7 (24 hours a day and all night 7 days a week)job keeping a look-out for new postings to every topic and then labouriously sending out emails to every subsciber to that topic.
How else do you explain this typical email??

Hello johnfowles,

A user has replied to a topic you are subscribed to at Gordon Lightfoot:

OK OK I know it really has to be an automatic reaction system that Florian set up,
But for me the really interesting thing is that in adition to the basic topic address, (which in this case is of course:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=0009370
you will note that an individual posting "marker" is appended.
in this case:-
p=3#000118
signifying the 118th message that is on page 3 of the topic.
If you then click that link, like magic corfid will open the topic at that particular message, thereby by-passing the previous 117.
So what?? you might be saying!
You may well ask
Well that obviates the tedious wait that dial uppers endure whilst all the various pictures in those erlier 117 messages re-download yet again and again and again as Janice so rightly observed.
Hence my advice is to select those topics in which you think you might be interested as they appear and if registered do a dummy reply, maing sure to tick/check the white square to indicate that you want email notification of all replies (i.e.subscribe)
Then you can utilise the location link in the emails to rapidly get directly to the latest posting.
NOTE
If you then get too many emails and/or lose interest in that topic each email in fact has an extra link to unsubscribe.
In my email example above this says:-
Stop notifications of this topic:
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=stop_notify;f=2;t=000937
or do another dummy reply but this time leaving the notification/subscribe box unticked/unchecked
I hope that may help as it was not obvious to me for a long time
