LA Times Obit Page time again.

They said it wouldn't last, that Music. They said that what slammed us between the eyes and in the back of the head at the same time - little Gordie, too - would fade fast. The "begats" of Rockn'Roll are long. One of them is the Drive In Diners, w/ Rollerskating Waitresses. A whole new art form in themselves.

The guy in the Obit line designed the first ones. On the LA Obit Page about Paul B. Clayton is a picture of Harvey's Broiler in Downey, CA. You probably had one in your town. Where the "Grease" type "hair boys" would show off their wheels (complete with 78, 45, & 33 capabile turntable under the driver's side seat.)

I don't know what you think about when you hear John Stewart's Heart of a Kid, but I think (start music here - "I'm still runnin' Wild One, runnin' like I always did. Still with the Heart of a Kid. With the Heart of a Kid.") of cruisin' Harvey's Broiler.

George Lucas paid attention. So did Garry Marshall.

And they both paid attention to Paul B. Clayton.

You can read the 5 "W"s about John Raitt on the LA Times Obit site. Wonderfully, lovingly written.

Here in OC there's a road, paralleling Bristol, called Raitt. All these street names gotta come from somewhere right? Some guy w/ a foot-long grey beard, a bald head, outsized Elvis sideburns, and offspring, w/ more offspring, and more offspring until the offspring named John, who fathered the offspring named Bonnie, who plays the blues like a Mother.

To see John Raitt and Bonnie sing together was worth bein' born. The have seen John sing in the debut of Carousel . . . The Soliloquy . . . what a wonderment. It's on the silver screen, but live . . . some were blessed to hear him in those days before I was an offspring in my daddy's eye.

I figure Father enjoyed the fame and Daughter does, too, and each cherished each others success. Music, I further figure, meant more to Father and to Daughter than fame. Father's Torch was passed to Daughter long ago. Now it's official. Father is dead . . . long live Daughter.

Read the Obit - it's good stuff,
Rex

Approaching Mitternacht

This would seem an appropriate time to lay own a few lines from the late gonzologist - Hunter Thompson:

"The Music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.

There's also a negative side"

Adios Uncle Duke,
