In 1952 it was decided to publish a list of the best selling records (78s) here in the UK.
The very first British No. 1 was Al Martino with Here In My Heart This was in November 1952.
We are now getting very close to No. 1000.
The Elvis Presley organisation are determined to grab that coveted spot. (It also falls very close to what would have been Elvis's 70th birthday had he lived, born 8th January 1935). To that end all Elvis's singles are being re-released over here, I think at the rate of 1 per week. Well, as we speak, or type, Elvis is No. 1 again with Jailhouse Rock No. 999. And his 19th No.1 in the UK. Will he hit the 1000 spot, possibly not, but it is a brave try. For those interested, JHR was No.1 here in October 1957.
